Minimum Promotion Test Requirements – Dan Ranks

 

SHODAN

Minimum 8 months and 120 days of training
Successful completion of 2 seminars or
courses after 1st.Kyu
 
Written essay required:”
“What is Aikido” and “What is Shugyo”

Technique:

All of 1st Kyu requirements:

Munetsuki Free demonstration

Yokomenuchi Free demonstration

Ushirotekubitori Free demonstration

Ryotetori Free demonstration

Suwari Waza Free demonstration

Hanmi Hantachi Free technique

Bokken Dori “Siezing the wooden sword”: unarmed defense

against sword attack:

Jyu Waza (Randori) Defense against multiple attackers (4).

NIDAN

Minimum 18 months and 240 days of training
Successful completion of 2 seminars per year after Shodan
Written essay required: “Aikido History and
Future”

Technique:

All of Shodan requirements.

Katatori Ganmenuchi Free demonstration.

Shomenuchi Free technique.

Hanmi Hatachi Free technique against two attackers

Jo Dori “Siezing the staff”: unarmed defense against

staff attack.

Futarigake.

Jyu Waza (Randori) Defense against multiple attackers (4)

SANDAN

Minimum 30 months and 360 days of training
Successful completion of 2 seminars per year
after Nidan
Written essay required: “Aikido Philosophy”

Technique:

All of Nidan requirements.

Jo Nage “Throwing with the staff”; free demonstration.

Kumijo Staff versus staff forms (5).

Kumitachi Sword versus sword forms (6).

Jyu Waza (Randori) Defense against multiple attackers (5).

YONDAN

Minimum 42 months and 480 days of training
Successful completion of 2 seminars per year
after Sandan
Written essay required: “Application of Aikido”

Technique:

Kihon Waza “Basic Technique”: free demonstrations.
Henka Waza “Changing technique”: free demonstrations.
Oyo Waza “Applied or Advanced technique”: free
demonstration.
Instructional Methodology: free demonstration of how to instruct Kihon waza and Oyo waza.
Kumijo Staff versus staff forms (5).
Kumitachi Sword versus sword forms (6).
Jyu Waza (Randori) Defense against multiple attackers (6).

 

  • Permission to test must be obtained from the Shidoin and approved by the HAA Shihanat least 6 months before the examination date.
  • Be sure you have the required number of days before applying for an examination.              
  • Application forms and essays should be completed at least 1 week before the examination.
  • Successful completion of seminars and courses will be taken into consideration.
  • Minimum age for Shodan is 15 years, Yondan is 22 years.
  • Dan examinations are usually taken at the spring and autumn HAA International Seminars unless otherwise specified.
